CAFE DIRECT TEA (TEADIRECT)

Great teas are often the result of expert blending that brings together a harmony of flavours.  Teadirect Tea is a careful balance of fine teas from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Those from Tanzania and Uganda make up the body of the flavour and give it a bright rosy colour, while the Kenyan teas add refreshing delicate flavours.

Great tea is not a simple matter. It requires expertise all the way from the field to the cup.  Teadirect continually invest in their growers by training them in all aspects of production and tasting so that they have the know-how to ensure Teadirect tea is always tip-top.

The Teadirect range of teas is 100% Fairtrade.  This means that their products are all certified by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation (FLO) and meet the criteria for paying a fair price to growers.  In 2003, Cafédirect became the only major brand to guarantee tea grower organisations a minimum price for their tea.  During 2007, Cafédirect worked directly with tea growers to introduce an improved pricing structure to provide additional support when market prices drop. As a result, the company increased its minimum price by 8%, and, including the Fairtrade premium, paid on average 47% over and above market prices.

Teadirect policy reflects increases in growers' production costs, rewards them for quality and allows investment into their businesses.  This ensures the highest quality tea for Teadirect so it tastes as great as ever; their tea partners can plan for the future, provide for their families, and strengthen their businesses.

Rising Prices Good News for Coffee Farmers
Source: Dow Jones Newswires & ICO
May 2008
Coffee prices have risen by 30-40% over the last year and are projected to be on an uptrend over the next three years. The International Coffee Organisation reports (May 2008) that price levels are firm and price volatility has become less intense. Average prices in the first four months of 2008 are higher than those recorded during previous months. However, the US dollar continues to weaken against other major currencies while prices of oil products are still rising, thus further increasing costs in the coffee supply chain of important items such as transportation and fertilizers. Some exporting countries have announced support measures for coffee producers to help them cope with constantly growing fertilizer costs and unfavourable exchange rate movements.
Demand for Arabica beans is expected to grow at a faster pace than for Robusta, according to a recent Morgan Stanley report. The move by companies such as McDonald's, Maxwell House and Dunkin Doughnuts to use only Arabica beans for their coffee is indicative of a reversal in the trend towards cheaper robusta coffee from traditional Arabica varieties, which started in the 1990s, said the report.

Arabica coffee on the Intercontinental Exchange is projected to average $1.25 per pound in the current market year ending September, and rise to $1.31/lb the following year, reaching $1.50/lb in 2011.
