Guatemala (Rainforest Alliance) Whole Beans; CASE 6x1000g

Guatemala (Rainforest Alliance) Whole Beans; CASE 6x1000g

 PRODUCER :  Nueva Granada Farm

STRENGTH GUIDE :  MEDIUM (3)
STUART'S TASTING NOTES
"A mild easy drinking coffee. Light acidity, medium bodied with refreshing light chocolate notes."
A BIT ABOUT THE COFFEE AND THE FARMERS
In Guatemala, 70 children out of every 1,000 die before age 5; 51 of those children will not live to reach their first birthdays. There is only 1 doctor for every 85,000 people in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.
Nueva Granada is a verdant farm nestled between two of Guatemala’s tallest volcanoes.  Beans grow high on mountainous slopes in soil made rich by volcanic ash, and ripen slowly late in the year.
The Nottebohm family has grown and traded coffee in Guatemala for well over a century.   Although Nueva Granada has always been a shade farm, since joining the Rainforest Alliance programme, the Nottebohms have planted an additional 30,000 shade trees — an improvement that has meant a noticeable increase in the number of butterflies, birds and small animals on the farm.
The farm’s private primary school serves the children of the farm's workers with three full-time teachers.   This educational programme, along with a preventive
health clinic, both exemplify the social standards required under Rainforest
Alliance sustainable certification.

Rising Prices Good News for Coffee Farmers

Coffee prices took a major dive in the second half of 2008 but are now rising again.  The long term projected uptrend is also good news.  Prices are now (September 2009) stabilising  around and above the 3$ per kilo mark, having plummeted to near 2.50$ per kilo in the early part of 2009.

Demand for Arabica beans is expected to grow at a faster pace than for Robusta.  The move by companies such as McDonald's, Maxwell House and Dunkin Doughnuts to use only Arabica beans for their coffee is indicative of a reversal in the trend towards cheaper robusta coffee from traditional Arabica varieties, which started in the 1990s.
